Artist Statement

My work deals primarily with an exploration of various manifestations and definitions of memory.  Memory is a term that often provokes a nostalgic connotation due to its common association with reminiscing.  As an artist, I am much more interested in memory as a construct, preferring an examination of the structure and function of memory as a whole rather than a creation of memorials.  By delving into the definitions and constructs of memory, I seek to perform an investigation and exploration into the structure of my own memory and, in turn, our shared communal memory.

Over the past year I have begun an examination of my own memory.  All of my current work is produced by extracting information from my own memory via various triggering mechanisms.  In an ongoing project, Everything that I know, I am attempting to record all of the information that I have retained, and to subsequently categorize and quantify that information.  Through this project, as well as other work produced from memory, I have begun to understand how and what types of information that I retain, and what this knowledge may say about my position in our current cultural and historical moment.  By exploring my own history and knowledge base, I am able to invite the viewer to investigate her/his own memory and relationship to our communal memory.
